Photographing in the City

When the weather was not conducive for landscape image making, I decided to search the downtown areas of Vernon for image possibilities.

Vernon is well-known for the great number of murals painted on the exteriors of buildings throughout its downtown. The challenge was to make unique images incorporating various elements of these areas and to not simply photograph another artist's work. In the above photo, I included a tree to mimic the tree painted in the mural.

Searching further, I found a wall with an abstract mural painted on it. Trying to vary my approach, I decided to zero in on some details within this mural. This approach entails deciding what to exclude. Texture became one of the key elements of these photos. Below is one of my resulting photos.

Next I wanted a different approach again. This time I noticed unusual colours on the walls of some old buidings in the core of the city. So I now tried creating some abstract graphic imagery, choosing various compositions concentrating on colours and shapes.

When you get bored and feel you have hit a photographic rut, take your camera into any urban environment nearby and look for these types of images. Just concentrate on a small area. It is good practice helping you to see images in unlikely places.

For the traveller, this might be one way to find photos in towns and cities that you visit.

In later blog posts, I will be showing some more of my travel photo ideas and experiences.

What do you think? I'd be interested in hearing your impressions.
