May 19 - Cyprus

Yesterday Ted's cousin, Daphne, arrived from Athens. This morning the four of us got up very early and went for a walk on the Larnaca Dhekelia beach. Daphne was the brave one and went for a swim in the sea. On the way "home" we stopped at a produce market and two bakeries to pick up edibles.

Later in the day, we, along with Ted's mother, went for a drive. Our first stop was at the river of Liopetry, a fishermen's mooring station, as seen in this photo.

We next drove to Dherynia from where we could see the ghost city of Famagusta, which is now on the Turkish side. From a viewing area, we could first see A Greek-Cypriot army post and in the distance, a Turkish post. In between these two was a UN post. In the distance were the tall buildings and homes of Famagusta, abandoned for 40 years, after the Greeks fled the advancing Turkish troops. Since negotiations broke down, no one has inhabited this large area of the city, thus its current situation of being a ghost city.

We then went to Fig Tree Bay in Protaras, which is a highly developed tourist trap. Here we had a snack at a beach restaurant which Ted recalls as being the only structure within miles. How things have changed!

Today was Ted's mother's 91st birthday. This is a photo of her having a snack with us at this restaurant.

This evening we, along with Ted's brother Hercules and his wife Susie, had a birthday party dinner and cake.
