June 9 - Photographing at the Edges of the Day

The best times to be making the most unique photographs are at the beginning and end of the days. At this time of the year, this poses a great challenge for me. Since sunrise is at about 5:30 a.m., I have to be at my chosen location before the sun rises. The sun has an easier time rising than I do. And this is too early to give me a chance for my morning coffee before I venture out. Sometimes I'm happy when I look outside and see either rain or winds. That's the cue to jump back into bed.

There are two additional annoying aspects to this sunrise photography. First, I may be at a location and nothing interesting comes of the sunrise. I've been disappointed by the conditions too many times, but try to make the best of it. Second, I hate the company I have to put up with. The black flies and mosquitoes have been especially fierce this spring. Such are the joys of nature photography!

Here are three images from recent mornings around Sudbury.

Recently I've had no luck with sunset light. This was the scene this evening along Jarvi Road.

There is only one way to make good photographs - continue being out at dawn and sunset.
