January 1 - On the Schilthorn

For today we had a forecast of fine weather, which proved to be accurate. Great, because yesterday we had purchased tickets (at great expense) to take the cable cars up to the Schilthorn above Murren. I bought a ski pass, for my one and only ski venture of this trip.

Veda, Kate, Monte and Annie photographed at the parking lot in Stechelberg in the Lauterbrunnen valley, where we are about to take the first cable car up to Murren. Note the wooden pads that have been placed on the ground. These are to protect the farmer's field on which the parking lot is located. From here we took two cable cars to the village of Murren which is on the slopes above these steep cliffs.

In Murren I found a ski shop from which I rented equipment for my day of skiing. At noon I met the rest of the party at the Schilthorn restaurant on Piz Gloria at an altitude of 2970 metres. This is accessed by two more cable cars from the village.

At the right edge of the photo you can see Birg, which is the cable car station from which the last ride takes people to the Piz Gloria. This place's claim to fame is the filming of 007 James bond movie "On Her majesty's Secret Service."

The first part of my descent was quite steep. The piste conditions were firm, but I could find some soft snow to turn on. Lower down the conditions got icier, since there had been no snowfall in recent days. We all eventually met up in the village so that we could catch the two cable cars back to the valley.

We drove back to our apartment in Habkern and finished the day with another fondue.

This one was better because we bought kirsch to soak our bread in before dipping it in the fondue.
