June 22 - Frame Within the Frame

The concept of a frame within a frame comes when you use some element within your image to frame your main subject.

1-P_19_00961-P_19_0096Walt's Party You can use a picture frame like the one above that Ed carried to this event, but this is not really practical for most photography.

2-T_06_01782-T_06_0178Fringe Festival performers This might be one exception, where these performers at a Fringe Festival in Edinburgh provided their own frame.

There are numerous elements that you can incorporate into your photos to frame your primary subject, including windows...

Framing forces the viewer to concentrate on the area of the photo where you want his eyes to go.

Tree branches and foliage which are part of your chosen scene can be used as ready-made framing devices, as in this photo of Harris Creek near Iron Bridge...

...or in this image of a narrow country lane near Long Lake.

10-S_21_010810-S_21_0108 Here the tree on the left side only still acts as a frame. The shadow at the bottom also contributes.

A partial frame is just as effective.

11-C_08_1004-311-C_08_1004-3 Here depth is created by framing the red barn with the snow-covered trees. Whereas red would usually come to the fore, the trees become the foreground element and a frame.

12-C_11_006912-C_11_0069 Sometimes nature provides you with a unique perspective, as at Silver Star Mountain, BC.

14-0100017814-01000178Fox cubs at den The frame need not always have esthetic value since it can illustrate animal behaviour, as in a fox's choice for it's den site.

Frames don't always have to be physical. Shadows are used to frame these mountains in the Himalayas in India.

Structures on two sides of a photo frame the main subjects in these two photos, first in Havana, Cuba, and following in Kashmir, India.

These can help you create more pleasing images.
