May 18 - Cyprus

Today Veda and I struck out on our own. After dropping Ted and his mother off at church, we headed west and drove past Lemesos.

Our first stop was at Kolossi Castle, which is in this photo. The current structure dates from 1454. This is more of a fortified house than a castle.

We then drove on to Kourion. This place became a permanent settlement in about the 13th century BC. It is situated on a high bluff overlooking the sea and has extensive excavations, which began after it was discovered in 1876. Today up here was extremely windy, making even photography difficult. This photo is one view of this site.

This is the view of the sea along the southern coast of Cyprus as seen from Kourion.

Our final stop was at the Sanctuary of Apollon Ylatis, established in the 8th century BC in honour of Apollo.

So if you think gas prices at home are high, check out the price here in Cyprus. Keep in mind that these prices are in Euros, so here we're paying over $2.00 a litre.
