Today's agenda included a visit to Sintra. We boarded a train for the forty minute ride north west from Lisbon. But for us, it was much too overrun by tourists, even in this off-season.

From the train station, we boarded a bus for the uphill ride. The first stop was at the ruins of a 10th-century Moorish castle, with spectacular views over the countryside.
Next we bused further uphill to Pena Palace, a wacky hill-top design, built in the mid-18th century.

Sintra may be worth a short visit, but not a place I would revisit.
After our return to Lisbon, we took a trolley for a final visit to the Alfama.

These are popular methods of transportation in the Alfama - electric powered tuks and the old trolleys.

One last photo of the Alfama district and the Teja River.
The day concluded with an excellent dinner - duck with a berry sauce and a great Portuguese wine.
