This morning began at dawn in Oia. Afterwards, we stopped in Fira, the next town along the edge of the caldera, where the attached photo was taken.
We then drove around the edge to the opposite end of Santorini, to Pharos, which is in the upper left distance in the photo. En route we stopped off at Akrotiri, an ancient Minoan city that was buried during a volcanic eruption in 1650 B.C., and where excavations began in 1967. Amazingly this whole area of excavation is enclosed in a huge building, so we could view it without fighting the heat and blazing sun. We also stopped briefly at a black sand/stone beach.
This evening Ted flew to Athens to meet some of his relatives and then travel on to Cyprus. How will we manage without him?
We will carry on.
