In-camera HDR

HDR, or high dynamic range imagery, has until now been available only through Photoshop or a number of plugins.

Now a number of cameras offer this feature within their menus.

My new Canon 5D Mark 3 has this capability of creating HDR images in camera. So on our recent drive home from Wisconsin I decided to give these features a try.

June 26-1 Marinette, Wisconsin, is a city that certainly has seen more prosperous days, as these buildings in its downtown show. But they are great subjects for photographers.

The in-camera HDR has a number of conversion options. This one was created using the "Art Bold" option.

June 26-2 This was a beautiful warm and sunny day as we drove Michigan Highway 2 which follows the western shore of Lake Michigan.

We stopped at this sandy beach so that I might test out the HDR on landscape photos.

In this one I used the "Art Vivid" option.

The camera's built-in HDR does produce some interesting results. These definitely are far from realistic depictions, but to me are nevertheless fun types of photos to make. I'd call it the photographer's form of poetic licence.

Do you think these photos too unrealistic, too weird, too far out?
