July 18 - Island Barns

I recently made two visits to Manitoulin Island.

Within the rural setting you can find a number of old barns. Most are not painted, but show the weathering of their years. Because they are not outstanding structures, I have to try to make their photos interesting using good photo techniques.

S_20_0227S_20_0227 Here I used the tractor tracks as a leading line to draw your eye to the building and thus the two cows which are small in the image. Then the eye goes to the trees and then back to the foreground. It also helps to have puffy clouds in a blue sky.

S_20_0239S_20_0239 This photo is more dramatic because of the dark threatening sky. The split-rail fence in the foreground adds depth to the image, a technique which is required because the photograph in itself has only two dimensions, height and width. A photo should suggest this third dimension.

My next project will be to provide tips on improving your photography, how to make better photographs. These posts will come at random intervals. Stay tuned.
