January 2017 - Sudbury to Vernon

January 22, 2017  •  Leave a Comment

It was time for our drive to the Okanagan Valley, to ski at Silver Star.

We left home on January 5, but drove only to Blind River, where we spent the night with the Bob and Claudette Gallagher.

This photo I made that evening of the North Channel as seen from Gallaghers' back yard.

17-22-117-22-1 On Friday we drove to Pewaukee, Wisconsin, where we visited my Aunt Aili where she lives with her daughter, Susan and her husband John. We left there on a cold Monday morning, driving west on I-90. The next days were some of the coldest days we've experienced on this route. We'd leave the hotel and the morning temperatures were usually about -16C and windy. The drive took us across Minnesota and into South Dakota.

17-22-217-22-2Corn Palace This is the Corn Palace in Mitchell, South Dakota. The facade is redone every year, made entirely with corn.

The highway through South Dakota, Wyoming, and Montana was bare and dry.

17-22-317-22-3 I photographed this barn on a cold crisp morning at Reed Point, just west of Billings, Montana.

We then spent parts of two days in Yellowstone National Park.

17-22-417-22-4 These were our greeters in the park, along the Gardner River.

17-22-517-22-5 This road through the Lamar Valley is the only road open to cars in the winter.

17-22-617-22-6 17-22-717-22-7 We encountered this coyote trotting along the road. It would occasionally sit on the road, so I was able to photograph it from my car window.

17-22-817-22-8 Last light on the mountains of Yellowstone. The next morning the temperature in the park was -31C. But the scenery was spectacular. This photo was made at the Yellowstone River in the Lamar Valley.

17-22-917-22-9 The frigid temperatures made for incredible hoar frost.

The following day we drove westward in Montana, across the panhandle of Idaho, and then northwest in Washington.

This photo is of a farm near Davenport, north of Spokane.

17-22-1317-22-13 The next day, Sunday January 15, we arrived in Vernon - the first mild day here after an unusual week of cold weather.

I enjoyed a fantastic five days of skiing this last week. More to come, and maybe even time for more photography.

December 20 - "Tis the Season

December 20, 2016  •  Leave a Comment

It is the festive season. We were in Toronto recently. The festive activities were evident everywhere, especially in the over-crowded shopping malls.

Santa was visiting Bayview Village one day, so we went with Annie to put in our requests.

Once Annie concluded her visit with Santa, the rest of the girls had their chance to give Santa their lists.

Xmas16-2Xmas16-2 Unfortunately for me, Santa provided the ladies unfettered access with their credit cards to the shopping malls. I can only hope that I'm on those lists.

From our house to yours, a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all. Great picture taking.

November 19 - Kivi Park

November 19, 2016  •  Leave a Comment

This summer Mrs. Lil Fielding donated a large parcel of land near the east end of Long Lake to the City of Sudbury, creating the largest park in the city. This property included the old Long Lake Public School and about 300 acres of land behind it. It was named Kivi Park in memory of her family and Finns who settled here. Since then the family has undertaken the task of developing this park land, building trails and clearing the bush.

Kivi1Kivi1 This is a section of one of the numerous trails that have been built.

The park consists of typical Sudbury-area landscape - meadows, rocky hills, swamp, birch forests, etc. Here are a few images that I made in Kivi Park this fall.

I look forward to exploring the park in the coming months in search of more photographic opportunities, so close to home.

October 24 - Fall Colour

October 24, 2016  •  Leave a Comment

The leaves are only now beginning to be blown off the trees here. This has been an unusually late fall colour season. Normally at this time of year the trees would all be bare.

This fall I've photographed on Manitoulin Island, Algonquin Park, around Lively and Whitefish, and in various parts of Sudbury.

But I do not have to venture far to find good photo opportunities for fall colour. Following are a few images that I made this month in my yard close to my house.
